WEST HARTFORD, CONN. (November 25, 2014) – Around 12:45 PM today a water main pipe broke creating a sink hole at the intersection of LaSalle Road and Farmington Avenue.
The Metropolitan District reported that water service was turned off to the businesses on LaSalle Road from Farmington Avenue to Arapahoe Road while repairs are being made. Work will take about 4-6 hours to be complete. The MDC is going door-to-door to every business on LaSalle Road informing them of the problem.
Presently the southbound lane on LaSalle Road is closed. The northbound lane is open for through traffic. Crews may have to close LaSalle Road completely at various times while repairs are made. Access to businesses on LaSalle Road may be obtained via Ellsworth Road.
The Department of Public Works has set up barricades and West Hartford Police is directing traffic.
The problem was first discovered while a police officer was on patrol. He noticed the sinkhole and 25-foot wide distress cracks near the crosswalk on LaSalle Road. The MDC, the West Hartford-Bloomfield Health District, the Department of Public Works and Town Engineer were alerted.
By the end of the day, the MDC will repair the pipe, fill the hole, and patch the pavement. Final repairs will be made in the Spring 2015.
